I am a big Connie Mason fan. There are only a couple of her books that are off the mark. However most of her books are great. They flow fast and I finish them quickly. This is one of her good ones. For those who are critical of the book to each their own. People and love are not perfect, and making love work is hard to do. Especially when those people are forced on each other. As I stated before people a lot of times expect too much of romance novels. Yes Lyon was a little hard at the beginning as he was a hardened warrior who did not know love. He did not want to get married, but back in that day you married for other reasons than love. He made some mistakes in trying to get her jealous, but he never slept with someone else after he was forced to go get her from the convent. Also his ex-mistress was the one that kept throwing herself at him and kissed him. Ariana made her own mistakes in trying to poison him and other things. He ends up sacrificing his honor for her and then cannot live with himself. However as in all romance novels love conquers all. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of a 5 is that every time they were just starting to get to a point to where they were going to start getting along and start trusting each other something happened. So to me they did not have enough of the good times, between the upheaval.Sex content high

The Lion Bride edition by Connie Mason Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Don't understand the negative review of this book. I thought the story was absolutely wonderful and very believable for the time period in question. The emotional depth of the story was incredible as was the progression of the relationship between Ariana and Lyon. DO NOT miss the opportunity to read this intense, touching story.
I love books about the conquest of William the Conqueror. This book is without a doubt one of my favorites of that era. I would recommend this book ever highly, as well as any book from this author. She has become one of my favorite authors because her books are filled with intrigue, adventure and romance.
This was my first book by this author. I been hooked every since.
It's Connie Mason at her bodice ripping best. Sit back and enjoy the bedlam of stupidity, lust and all around villainy!
Despite a well-worn plot (knight invader inherits lands and a woman with it), Mason managed to put a new spin on it and keep it interesting. I'm not really sure why the abuse of the heroine needed to be part of the story since it didn't support any central theme of the novel, but other than that bit, the story unfolds nicely and the hero matures without any out of hand physical or mental abuse towards his lady. Overall I was pleased with the flow and cohesion of the writing and the pace of the story telling. If you're looking for a romance with a little more meat in the story than normal (akin to Iris Johansen's romantic story-telling), you will not be disappointed with this read.
I won't bother anybody who honors me with reading this short review with a summary of the story, since others have done so before me perfectly well.
Let me just tell you that the story has everything that makes it an attractive read. Lyon of Normandy, a bastard knight and one of King William's most appreciated liegeman is portrayed as an austere but fair knight. According to his king's wish he married Lady Ariana, who is a strong-minded and independent woman. Both main characters were likeable and supported the plot of the story very well. However, Ariana seemed to be a more proactive person not only because she had a rare "talent" but just because her situation forced her to be. No matter how different the hero/heroine were, they had one thing in common - both of them were looking for love in their lives and throughout the book and many ordeals they finally found it.
The book was very nicely written and had many good, even some excellent moments. However, I would have appreciated if the story would have offered some novelty in this genre instead of just a well used storyline of this category. In any case and even so it was well written and very entertaining.
After William the Conqueror claimed the throne of England in 1066, he rewarded some of his Norman knights with holdings and lands and some of those came with Saxon wives. In 1067, Lyon of Normandy ("The Lion"), a knight who once saved William's life, is given Cragmere in Northumbria where William wants a strong knight to resist what he anticipates may be an invasion by the Scots. But Cragmere has a young mistress, Ariana, a 14-year-old flaxen haired girl who is proud and fearless and hates the Norman conquerors for having killed her menfolk. Nevertheless, she is forced to wed the Lion; then he puts her in an abbey for 5 years and forgets her. She is abused by the nuns (and is no doubt bored to death). Her only visitor, and that surreptitious, is her former betrothed, Lord Edric, who comes at night and talks to her through the fence to tell her he wants to take her to Scotland and have the marriage annulled so she can be his. While Ariana rots in the abbey, Lyon takes a mistress at William's court who he enjoys for several years. When William finally orders Lyon to bed his bride (who is now 19, which is old by the standards of the time) and sire an heir, Lyon reluctantly obeys to find a young woman who does not want him.
That's the basic set up for the story and while it held my interest there are some plot and character issues that kept me from giving it 5 stars. As another reviewer pointed out, this "hero" is flawed in a way that would not produce the reaction in Ariana (desire leading to love) that the author sets forth. He has little feeling for the humiliation he repeatedly imposes on Ariana and his honor, so far as women, go seems rather flexible. It was confusing to think of him sharing his nights with his mistress for YEARS and then dropping her like a hot rock for a rebellious girl who hates him (and rightly so). Sometimes he showed great tenderness and other times he was completely unfeeling...one could have wanted a bit more consistency. His only constancy seemed to be his lust for his bride.
It's an entertaining read that has some good twists and turns--as well as some issues. Still, I recommend it.
