I loved, loved, loved this story!
I won't go into analyzing the characters or summarizing the plot because many reviewers before me have already done so. I will say, though, that J. Barton Mitchell has an ability to bring his characters and scenes to life in your own imagination. As I read the book, it played out like a movie in my mind. I could picture the scenes in great detail, from the walkers attacking, to the trading post, to the land ships, to the scene of the strange lands, to the drowning planes, to the score wall at Midnight City. I thought the way the characters used artifacts was particularly imaginative. I can't wait to read the next book and discover more about Zoey's abilities. This book is well worth the read. It's highly entertaining and extremely imaginative.

I'll be honest––I've had this book on my To Be Read list for so long that I forgot what it was about. I knew nothing going in, and couldn't have been more happy about that. It was AWESOME. Nearly non-stop action, adventure, suspense, rich characters, a unique world, and an ending that begs for more. This is what all Hollywood blockbusters should be. I'm hooked! The story was engaging and well-paced. I couldn't predict anything and always wanted to know what would happen next. The characters are terrific. Holt is a great hero with a hidden vulnerability inside of him, Mira is a strong young woman, and Zoey is a mystery I want to keep unraveling. And Max is awesome, because who doesn't love candy-eating dogs? The world building and "magic" is also excellent. I love how it was introduced and how humans have chosen to survive in this apocalyptic world. Most impressive was Midnight City itself. I won't say much, except that it was described so vividly I thought I was there for a moment. The ending is an explosive climax and leaves me wondering what will happen next. I care about these characters and want them to have a happy ending, but I feel like that's going to be a long ways away yet. And I can't wait to go with them on their adventure.
Alien books aren’t my thing, but Midnight City is definitely an exception. Right from the first page, there was action! You feel pulled in and forget everything around you. Every page was addicting, I never felt bored or skimmed. The characters were very nice to read. All three of the main characters had something to offer, and I wanted to get to know them inside and out. I felt like Mitchell really wanted us to relate to the characters, and it worked on me. These are the type of books I like. When it comes to the romance it isn’t fast, and they aren’t attracted to each other right off the bat. I’m a romance reader; so insta-love is common to me, but when reading the characters I felt like it was a nice break. There’s no sexual tension throughout the book at all; it’s a serious relationship growing like normal. Insta-love isn’t normal… as much as that bothers me (Seriously, I just want a hot guy to fall in love with me at first sight - is that too much to ask?).

The pacing, as I said, was nice and fast. It didn’t get confusing at all; it was written very well. While looking at other Goodreads’ reviews, I have to agree with some of them. The ending felt a little rushed. I had many questions left unanswered, and it bothered me to wait till the next book. I know many authors do this, but it still irritates me. Waiting isn’t my thing. But I need to suck it up and wait for the second; and when it comes out, I’ll try to be the first person to grab that ARC.

Good shipping good book
I thought the concept of the book was interesting, but it's just one convienent thing after another. It became predictable. Something bad would happen, something massively convienent would happen that would get everyone out of the bad situation.
A very intelligently written book. Original plot, well developed characters, excellent twists and turns, sweet young romance, strong female lead. This book has it all. I enjoyed the authors narrative style - very refreshing. Definitely will read the next one in this series.
I have grown to love the characters and by this admission, I know this book to be a good read for me. Initially, I had to read despite my ambivalence toward the beginning of the story. Now that I'm done with book 1, I cannot wait to get started. The characters grew in depth fairly well (even though I would have liked more -which is why I didn't rate it a five) it's good enough to earn an honest four rating. I hope book three doesn't take an entire year.
